Examples of the matters that have been covered by covenants (historically)

• Limiting the height of any buildings (often used near airports)
• Limiting the number or type of buildings that can be built
• Removing the right to build fences (often used on corner plots so that driver sight lines are not hindered)
• The materials that must be used in construction (eg roofing materials)
• The colour of paint applied to any external woodwork
• Limit the keeping of chickens, sheep or other livestock
• The requirement to plant (or not plant) certain vegetation
• Whether holiday/festive decorations can be displayed
• Limit “dirty businesses” in a residential areas such as chemical production
• Forbid “any” business use
• Installation of amateur radio antenna
• Blocking of a scenic view
• Restricting any future sale to a minority person based of race, ethnicity, religion or social class (no longer enforceable)
• Restricting Afro-Caribbean’s from accessing the property with the exception of chauffeurs, gardeners and domestic servants (no longer enforceable)
• Not to open a competing business (may be used to prevent a competing retail store; or to prevent doctors or other professionals from setting up a practice nearby)
• Keeping of pets
• Parking of commercial cars/vans in dedicated or communal parking areas
• Exclusion of children
