Planning Appeals: Round two

After the local council has reached its decision and refused a planning application, the developer  can challenge the decision by appealing to the Planning Inspectorate based in Bristol.


Why does the Planning Appeal go to Bristol?

Comments are sometimes made by local residents or local council officials concerning the unfairness of a process that takes a local matter that would ordinarily be decided by the local council to a central government department based in another part of the country.

It is easy to be critical and dismissive of the existing appeal process. However, it would be more informative if those critical of the existing process would also state their preferred changes. It is clear that:


There may be alternatives to the exiting appeal process, but it is unlikely that any would form a significant improvement on the current planning appeal process that is run from Bristol.
