Car parking policy


The TfL research has been translated into local planning policy.  Transport policy T8 as published by Croydon Council.  


The availability of car parking is a significant factor in the decision as to whether or not to make a particular journey by car or by another mode. Car parking also takes up a large amount of space in development and reduces densities. Reducing the amount of parking provision in new development is therefore essential to promote sustainable transport choices and reduce the propensity to travel by car. To achieve this, PPG13 states that local authorities should set maximum parking standards for broad classes of development in their development plans.


Car parking and the number of bedrooms


The planning framework recognises that as the number of bedrooms within a dwelling is increased the level of car ownership and the need for the associated parking increases. National guidelines set-out the on-site parking provision for residential properties as follows:-







In areas with good access to public transport, the expectation is that less parking space will be provided within new developments.
