Provision for bicycle storage

TfL has mandated each London council to provide secure bicycle storage within all new residential developments. The minimum TfL requirement is space to store 1 bicycle for a dwelling up to 45 sqm (a very modest flat), and 2 bicycles for all larger dwellings.

Councils are forming cycle storage standards and some councils are linking the cycle storage requirement to the PTAL level and also require extra storage to allow for double bedrooms and visitors.

The future of car ownership

The big US motor companies have identified that the level of car ownership in the US and western Europe will reduce over the next decade. The reduction will be most pronounced in those households with multiple cars.

The factors that are ‘driving’ this change are:

• The reduced parking availability at home and at destinations
• Increasing cost of car ownership
• Large cities are getting smarter and more integrated in the provision of public transport
• Availability of convenient alternative transport (eg car sharing schemes such as ZipCar, bicycles and public transport)
• The developing technology and the permitted use of self-driving cars on the public highways. Autonomous cars will create 2 changes:

1. Two car families today, where one parent drives to work and the other parent needs a second car to ferry children to school or run errands during the day will change to one car families. The working parent will drive to work and then release the car to make its own way home so that it is available for the daytime activities. Then, late afternoon the car will drive itself to the work place ready to bring the working parent home
2. Autonomous cars will significantly reduce the cost of taxis and car hire. Combined with the increase in “cost of ownership” the financial scales will tip further toward hiring a car on an “as needed” basis.
